Using Xwe in Kurdish

- So, we use the word xwe in this way, but what exactly is this word? In grammar, this word is called a reflexive pronoun. It refers back to the subject of the sentence. For example, in the sentence "Ez xwe dibînim," there is a logical (lɒdʒɪkᵊl) relationship between xwe and ez because both words refer to the same person. That's why it's called reflexive. Reflexive means "returning" or "reflecting," and here the word xwe refers back to the subject. It indicates that the action is happening to the subject itself.
- In English, this word is expressed by myself, yourself, himself. However, in Kurdish, to convey (kənveɪ) the meaning of myself, we need to add a personal pronoun in front (frʌnt) of this word. For example, ez xwe means myself, while (waɪl) tu xwe means yourself.
- So why do we say Ez birayê xwe dibînim but not Ez birayê min dibînim? In Kurdish, instead of saying "I see my brother," we say "I see the brother of myself." I think this is all about harmony. For example, when we make a sentence in the past tense, using this form becomes more important. Saying Min birayê min dît instead of Min birayê xwe dît doesn't sound as pleasant ⇒so Min birayê xwe dît sounds better.
